Shrinking reef

Acrylic, rubber

430 mm x 930 mm x 90 mm

Shrinking reef refers to the increasing ocean acidification and water temperatures in the Great Barrier Reef, which have been fuelled by human created greenhouse gas emissions. This has reduced the ability of sea creatures, such as shellfish, sea corals and other marine organisms, to reproduce and grow. Consequently the reef is ‘shrinking’.

The puzzle pieces highlight the dilemma scientists face in overcoming the impending destruction of the Reef. The orange puzzle piece symbolises the increasing water temperatures, the blue puzzle piece symbolises the ocean and the internal puzzle piece represents the threat to marine life.
