Leaf parrot

Watercolour on paper

930 mm x 1235 mm

This artwork looks at how aspects of nature repeat; where colour, shape and pattern reform and create something unique. The painting merges botany and ornithology and explores species coexistence. Parrot (Psittaciformes sp.) feathers are substituted with leaves of native plants (Eucalyptus sp. and Eremophila sp.).

I collected the leaves in my neighbourhood with my children joining me in the search. Their enthusiasm was infectious. We marvelled at the intricate and differing details. The beauty of the leaves and all nature was in the detail of its imperfections and irregularities; not just in life but in the process of death.
