Hildegard’s book of herbs

Eco dye, pastel and ink on paper

700 mm x 300 mm x 80 mm

The German medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen, presently best known for her music, also wrote books on herbalism and health. During medieval times biology, botany and medicine formed part of natural philosophy, the precursor of natural science. To Hildegard the green of plants was the symbol of the divine; she believed that their healing properties could be transformed to people and give us the strength to thrive.

My work is coloured with dyes extracted from plants combined with mordants and imprinted with medicinal herbs; these are drawn over with anatomical drawings and writings about her life and work.
