We are red in tooth and claw

Oil on board

This work was inspired by a visit to the catacombs in Paris. It is also a response to Tennyson’s poem In Memorium A.H.H, specifically the line: ‘nature, red in tooth and claw’.

We are not separate from nature, and to exist is to take the place of something else. We are the dominant species because of our ingenuity and ability to cooperate, but I suspect it’s our ruthlessness and inclination for violence that has served us most effectively.

This is a memorial to species past and present that we have impacted.
