Metamorphosis provides a unique time-lapse and translucent perspective of a pupating fly. It results from Erica’s creative research into scientific visualisation of volumetric, or ‘virtual’ data acquired from 3D microcomputed X-ray tomography (3D Micro-CT).

Undertaking a residency at the Natural History Museum, London, Erica investigated the forensic science of fly pupa development for post-mortem analysis. Maggots are more commonly associated with death and decay, but just like caterpillars they undergo a transitional period before emerging as exquisite insects. While this developmental stage is normally concealed inside an opaque carapace, in this work Erica has animated and visualised the volumetric data to reveal for the first time the mystery of metamorphosis.
