Acrylic and ink on board
Emma Kirby ‘grows’ her images using recipes of paint, ink and pigment. Manus scientia (hand of science) is a reference to Medieval religious art that depicted ‘Manus Dei’ (hand of God) to indicate God’s influence. This composition suggests a hand reaching from above, but it is rendered in fractals, vortex streets and meanders that are generated by the hand of natural science.
On completing this work, Emma heard about renowned physicist and atheist Stephen Hawking’s death. This work is dedicated to him.
