Extant DNA

Raw fish (Aptychotrema rostrata, shovel-nose shark) monoprint

Using a raw specimen as the printing plate, the Japanese rubbing technique Gyotaku, is where my art meets science. In our ‘beautiful world’, sharks are often under-rated, but they are one of our oldest living fossils, dating back 400 million years.

An international project, The Barcode of Life, aims to record fish species' DNA. Captivated by the process of transferring fish anatomy by ink onto paper, am I too gathering DNA?
