Elusive flight: chequered copper butterfly (Lucia limbaria)

Oil on linen

The rare chequered copper butterfly, Lucia limbaria, was found in 2011 in Victoria Park after not being recorded in the Adelaide Plains for over 40 years. Here I have depicted it with its host plant, Oxalis perennans, on the city fringe. Its survival in this urban area is remarkable and fragile.
