Anastasis

Smalti and unglazed ceramic mosaic over fibreglass, steel mesh and cement substrate

In 2013 a bushfire destroyed my community and environment in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Since then I have observed the landscape around me regenerate with varied success. Blackened bark and dead tree carcasses remain as evidence of its past. The built environment has shifted from charred rubble to a renewed suburb with individuals understanding their own capacity for resilience. Anastasis is inspired by a slice of a burnt tree. One face reveals the capacity of the environment to flourish after adversity. The other suggests the majesty of our environment and is a memorial to the ashen bushland that was lost.
