After the autumn rains

Watercolour on paper

Painting this work was a labour of love. Love of the colours of autumn and the feel of the changing season with its damp cool watery sunshine. But also, a love of, and particular interest in, the biology of fungi. The fungi we see appearing amongst the leaves are the fruiting bodies of much larger organisms so delicate and hairlike that they are difficult to see. Fungi are a quite separate lifeform, genetically more similar to animals than plants. Seeking toadstools and mushrooms is a treasure hunt, there is joy in each find, and joy in painting them.
