The 5 km wide and 45 km long limestone belt with its many caves extends from Chillagoe to the northwest and to the Palmer River. Inside the caves, rainwater, carbon dioxide and soil form acid that seeps through cracks and builds the limestone. The cave decorations, speleothems, reflect the off-white calcium carbonate, which built up a unique graffiti.
